The Commissioner of Karachi has officially fixed the price of sugar across the city, setting the wholesale rate at Rs 140 per kilogram and the retail price at Rs 143 per kilogram. A notification to this effect has been issued, stating that the revised prices have come into force immediately and will remain applicable until further notice.

According to the notification from the commissioner’s office, no individual, wholesaler, or retailer is permitted to sell sugar at prices higher or lower than the officially notified rates. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the price controls. The commissioner has also directed all wholesalers and retailers to prominently display the official price list at their shops to ensure transparency and public awareness.

Earlier, in December 2025, the Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association highlighted a noticeable decline in sugar prices at the wholesale level. Abdul Rauf Ibrahim stated that sugar prices in Karachi’s wholesale markets had dropped by Rs 6 per kilogram, providing some relief to traders. He said wholesale prices had fallen to Rs 146 per kilogram, while the ex-mill price declined to Rs 142 per kilogram following the start of the sugarcane crushing season.

Ibrahim noted that sugar prices have been on a downward trend since crushing began, adding that rates have fallen by as much as Rs 54 per kilogram since December 1. Despite this significant reduction at the wholesale level, he pointed out that retail prices have remained unusually high, with sugar still being sold to consumers at rates ranging between Rs 170 and Rs 180 per kilogram.

He attributed the gap between wholesale and retail prices to weak administrative oversight and inadequate enforcement, which has prevented the benefits of lower prices from reaching consumers. Expressing optimism, Ibrahim said sugar prices could decline further and may reach around Rs 120 per kilogram by the end of the month, provided effective monitoring and enforcement measures are implemented.

He urged the authorities to ensure that reductions in wholesale prices are reflected promptly in retail markets so that consumers can benefit from the ongoing decline in sugar prices.
