The Punjab government has announced free public transport services in Lahore from February 6 to February 8 to facilitate Basant celebrations and reduce the risk of road accidents by discouraging motorcycle use. The initiative aims to improve public safety during the festive period while ensuring smoother traffic flow across the city.
Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that strict rules will be enforced to regulate kite-flying activities, with a complete ban on metallic and chemically treated kite strings due to safety concerns. To ensure compliance, kite manufacturers and sellers will be required to register with their respective Deputy Commissioners, and any violations of the regulations may result in fines or imprisonment.
Authorities have clarified that only cotton-based kite strings with a maximum of nine strands will be permitted during the celebrations. In addition, the Walled City Authority plans to conduct a public survey to help ensure that Basant is celebrated in a safe, controlled, and well-organized manner. The government believes these measures will not only enhance public safety but also promote tourism and create employment opportunities linked to cultural festivities.
