Electricity prices are expected to rise by Rs. 0.48 per unit for one month under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism, adding further pressure on consumers already facing high power costs. The Central Power Purchasing Agency has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority seeking approval for an increase in electricity tariffs for December, and NEPRA is set to conduct a hearing on the request.
According to the petition, total electricity generation in December reached 8.487 billion units, while 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies across the country. The CPPA reported that the average cost of electricity during the month stood at Rs. 9.62 per unit, reflecting the impact of fuel prices and the overall energy mix.
In December, nuclear power remained the largest source of electricity generation, contributing 25.05 percent of total output. Hydel power accounted for 18.07 percent, while generation from imported liquefied natural gas stood at 17.24 percent. Local coal contributed 13.99 percent, imported coal made up 10.13 percent, and natural gas accounted for 11.20 percent of total electricity generation.
If the proposed adjustment is approved by NEPRA, the increase will be passed on to consumers through their electricity bills for a single month. The potential hike is likely to add to household and business expenses at a time when electricity tariffs remain a major concern for the public.
