The Collectorate of Customs Enforcement in Karachi successfully intercepted a major smuggling attempt involving 20,000 kilograms of Chinese salt, also known as Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), which had been mis-declared as citric acid. The seized consignment, valued at Rs. 20.5 million, was recovered during a targeted operation at A-One Godown near Walika Chowrangi.
Acting on credible intelligence, the Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) conducted a raid at Shed No. 9 of M/s United Traders. Several bags marked as citric acid were recovered, but an initial inspection revealed that many contained Chinese salt, identifiable by its distinctive smell and taste, while the remainder held genuine citric acid.
The custodian had presented GD No. GWRI-HC-1444-10-11-2025, declaring the entire shipment as citric acid imported from Iran. A detailed examination confirmed the misdeclaration, resulting in the seizure of 800 bags of Chinese salt, each weighing 25 kilograms, and 100 bags of genuine citric acid of the same weight. The confiscated goods have been transferred to a secure warehouse, and samples have been sent for laboratory testing to confirm composition. Legal proceedings have been initiated under the Customs Act, 1969.
This operation underscores the Federal Board of Revenue’s ongoing commitment to combating smuggling, safeguarding the integrity of imports, and protecting Pakistan’s economy from illicit trade. The action also sends a strong signal to traders and importers that misdeclaration and illegal imports will not be tolerated.
