The semifinal football match at the 35th National Games in Karachi erupted into chaos when players from Pakistan Army and WAPDA clashed violently at the KPT Sports Complex, turning the venue into a scene resembling a battlefield. The incident occurred immediately after the final whistle, as Army players celebrated their victory aggressively in front of the WAPDA bench, provoking the opposition and triggering a verbal confrontation that quickly escalated into physical violence.
The altercation intensified when WAPDA player Shaik Dost reportedly ran forward and kicked an Army player, prompting a larger melee involving multiple players. In the midst of the chaos, several WAPDA players confronted the referee, who had made a disputed decision during the match. The referee attempted to seek safety inside the officials’ room, but some players allegedly forced their way in and assaulted him, further escalating the disorder.
Authorities, including match officials and the city Commissioner, are compiling a detailed report to submit to the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) and the Pakistan Football Federation. Given the severity of the incident, disciplinary measures against players from both teams are considered highly likely, including possible suspensions or fines.
The 35th National Games, which officially began on December 6, 2025, in Karachi, continue to showcase multiple sports disciplines across more than 20 venues in the city. The week-long event, running until December 13, brings together athletes from across Pakistan to compete in 32 different sports, highlighting the country’s growing focus on promoting national-level sporting talent. The unfortunate football incident, however, underscores the need for stricter security measures and fair play enforcement at high-stakes competitions.
