Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has expressed support for the government’s decision to boycott Pakistan’s group-stage match against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Afridi shared his views on social media platform X, emphasizing his belief that cricket can serve as a bridge when political relations are tense. While noting his regret over missing the fixture, he reiterated his backing of the government’s stance.

“I’ve always believed cricket can open doors when politics closes them. It’s regrettable that Pakistan won’t play India at the T20 World Cup, but I stand behind my government’s decision,” Afridi stated.

Pakistan recently confirmed that its men’s cricket team will participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 but will boycott the high-profile group-stage match against India. Officials said the decision aims to exert financial pressure on the International Cricket Council, citing concerns over alleged double standards and undue influence from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The move follows the ICC’s replacement of Bangladesh with Scotland in the tournament after the Bangladesh Cricket Board declined to tour India. This decision came after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, reportedly under BCCI direction.
