Applications Open for Fully Funded OIST Research Internship in Japan – Spring 2026

The OIST Research Internship for Spring 2026 presents a fully funded opportunity for international students eager to gain immersive, hands-on research experience in Japan. Hosted by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), this internship welcomes participants from all around the world, including undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates. With no requirement for IELTS or TOEFL, the program is designed to be accessible and inclusive for global applicants.

Running from April 1 to September 30, 2026, the internship spans a flexible duration of two to six months. Interns are integrated into active research groups and contribute directly to high-level projects under the guidance of experienced scientists across various STEM disciplines. These include neuroscience, physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, mathematics, marine sciences, engineering, and computational science.

Participants receive full financial support, which includes a daily allowance of 2,400 JPY, a local shuttle bus pass, a furnished on- or off-campus accommodation, and round-trip airfare. Additionally, OIST provides administrative support for visa arrangements and other logistics, enabling interns to focus entirely on their research engagement and academic development.

To qualify, applicants must either be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a bachelor's or master's degree program. There are no restrictions based on nationality or language testing requirements. The application process involves submitting a curriculum vitae, academic transcript, statement of interest, a recent ID photo, and a letter of recommendation through the official OIST online portal. Once submitted, the recommender will receive instructions via email to upload their letter directly.
