CDA Initiates Major Drive to Replace Allergy-Causing Trees Across Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority has launched a major initiative in Islamabad to remove Paper Mulberry trees and replace them with native species, following expert findings that the trees are a significant cause of severe pollen allergies and asthma in the city. Scientific studies have linked Paper Mulberry pollen to dangerous increases in respiratory illnesses each spring, prompting the Islamabad High Court to act on a Public Interest Litigation and form a technical committee of specialists to assess the situation.

The committee unanimously recommended phasing out Paper Mulberry and planting indigenous, environmentally friendly trees in their place. This advice was later endorsed at the highest levels, with the Supreme Court supporting the removal plan through an expert panel established by the former Chief Justice of Pakistan, and the Prime Minister’s Office issuing directions to implement the initiative.

Officials have stated that the operation is being conducted under strict supervision to ensure only Paper Mulberry trees are removed, avoiding damage to other species. To offset the loss of tree cover, the Capital Development Authority has adopted a three-for-one replacement strategy, planting three native trees for every Paper Mulberry removed. A tender has been issued for the plantation of 20,000 indigenous trees, and all cleared sites are scheduled for replanting during Spring 2026.
