Karachi has taken a significant step toward sustainable urban development with the inauguration of a Rs 1 billion solar streetlight project on Shahrah-e-Faisal by Mayor Murtaza Wahab. The project is designed to tackle the ongoing energy crisis by replacing conventional streetlights with solar-powered alternatives, ensuring continuous illumination during load-shedding while cutting electricity usage and minimizing environmental pollution.
This initiative is projected to save the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation approximately Rs 22.5 million each year in energy costs. Similar solar lighting upgrades have already been implemented on other key roads, such as Shahrah-e-Iran. The solar system includes a five-year warranty, with maintenance and operations overseen by the installation company.
